Institutionele geschiedenis

Mount Saint Vincent University had its origins as an academy for young girls established by the Sisters of Charity in Rockingham (present day Halifax) in 1873. The original purpose of the academy was to train novices and young sisters as teachers, but the Sisters also recognised a need to educate other young women and therefore opened the academy to young women who lived in the city of Halifax. In 1925 the Nova Scotia Legislature passed a bill granting a charter to Mount Saint Vincent College empowering it to grant its own degrees. With that, Mount Saint Vincent College became the only independent women’s college in the British Commonwealth. It offered degrees in Education, Nursing and Arts.

The College continued to grow until 1966, when a new government charter was granted and the College became Mount Saint Vincent University, a co-educational institution. The Mount is a primarily undergraduate public university that offer programs in Arts, Education, Science, and Professional Studies.

Bereik en inhoud

This recording contains two sides. Side A is a continuation of Sister Veronica O'Reilley's lecture on women's movements in the Christian Church from Side B of MSVUA-AV-162A. Side B of this tape contains a recording from the second day of the conference which celebrates the launch of the Decade of Churches in Solidarity with Women. This recording contains a lecture from Reverend Latonya Bynum Director of Women in Ministry of Christian Church Disciples of Christ. The lecture is on women sharing ministry with other women. On Side A from 00:00:00 to 00:32:03 is the rest of Sister Veronica O'Reilley's lecture, followed by applause. From 00:32:10 to 00:34:14 a question period follows. 00:34:15 to 00:35:55 Jean Gordon, the President of the Inter-Church Council of Canada reflects on Sister Veronica O'Reilley's lecture. 00:35:56 to 00:42:15 Joyce Kennedy makes announcements, gives thanks to sponsors and talks about changes to the schedule. From 00:42:12 to 00:46:47 an audience member makes a comment about the parable of the Naked Lady which begins another comment and question period. The questions are difficult to hear. From 00:46:47 to 00:47:29 is a part of an introduction to another part of the conference but is cut off. On Side B from 00:00:00 to 00:08:02 is the rest of the introduction begun on Side A. This introduction is for the reading of liturgies and prayer which were then given by Emma Miller, President of Maritime Conference UCW (United Church Women) and an unnamed women. From 00:08:02 to 00:09:17 the hymn Glory to God is performed. From 00:09:18 to 00:13:00 an unnamed woman introduced Latonya Byunm and the Christian Church Disciples of Christ. From 00:13:01 to 00:43:48 Latonya Byntum lectures on the topic of women sharing ministry with other women. From 00:14:40 to 00:15:35 attendees are invited to talk among themselves about women with whom they have had the opportunity to share ministry. It is too loud to make out any one conversation during this time. From 00:43:48 to 00:43:51 the tape is blank, cutting off the last few words of Latonya Byunm's lecture. From 00:43:51 to 00:47:28 applause is followed by comments and questions from the audience.
